What time should I arrive before my session?
We recommend that you arrive 10 minutes before your time slot to allow time to change and for the pre-use brief.
Portstewart and Portstewart Strand can become very busy during the holidays and in good weather. Please factor this into your planned journey time and allow plenty of time to get to the beach. Sauna & Sea cannot be held responsible for bookings missed due to traffic or lack of parking. See below ‘How do I get to the sauna’ for more information on parking.
Arriving late will shorten the duration of your experience.
How do I get to the sauna?
We are located on Portstewart Strand in Northern Ireland to the right of the beach entrance in front of Harry’s Shack restaurant. The easiest way to find us is on Google Maps, simply type in Sauna and Sea.
Where can I park?
Free parking is available on the beach for customers to use for the duration of their experience. If you wish to stay on the beach beyond this you will be subject to the normal National Trust parking charge (free for National Trust members, so why not sign up).
On busy days parking on the beach can be limited and you may have to queue. Please factor this into your travel plans. Free roadside parking is available along Strand Road.
Where can I leave my belongings?
Due to limited space, we advise bringing minimal personal belongings with you and lock any valuables in your car.
Small lockers are available in the changing gazebo. You will be able to leave your belongings here at your own risk. Sauna & Sea accepts no responsibility for the loss of or damage to any belongings.
The changing area
There is a 3m x 2m gazebo at the side of the sauna which provides shelter from the elements and a degree of privacy. There are hanging spaces for change robes/ towels. Please be aware that the floor is sand. Feeling the sand between your toes is all part of the beach experience.
If you would like to use the changing gazebo at the end of your session please be mindful of the next customers who may be arriving shortly after you finish.
Our Sauna Experience
How does the 30-minute taster work?
A great introduction to hot and cold therapy the Sauna & Sea way. Just enough time for the recommended 5-20 minutes of sauna to compliment your cold dip. Most customers are surprised how quickly the 30 minutes disappears and generally book a longer session 2nd time around.
How do the 60 and 90-minute Sauna Experiences work?
Recommended for those wanting to experience the full benefits of authentic sauna culture. This experience is for up to 8 people.
The sauna will comfortably seat 6 at a time. If your group is 6-8 people then they will have to alternate between sauna and sea/beach. This fits perfectly with the hot-cold protocol mentioned above.
For an authentic sauna experience, customers can manage the ‘löyly’ (the steam that rises from the sauna stove), allowing control of heat and intensity.
The key to this is drizzle, don’t dump!
Although adding water over the rocks humidifies the session and is one of the best aspects of an authentic Finnish sauna, please remember not to dump water on the rocks. Instead, drizzle water on with a ladle intermittently until the heat reaches an appropriate level. More water = greater humidity and intensity.
If you’d like the sauna to be hotter, please ask our staff member on site and they will be happy to assist.
